Tree lungwort, or Lobaria pulmonaria is large epiphytic lichen which consists of a fungus and a green alga living in a symbiotic relationship with a cyanobacteria. It grows in moist, shady, temperate climates and on conifers, hardwoods, and mossy rocks. It can be abundant in rich, healthy, old-growth forests. It is sensitive to air pollution, so its presence is an indicator of clean air.
