Chaga is a parasitic fungus that, where I am, grows on mature yellow birch trees. It likes boreal forests, humid, partly shady environments, and cold winters. It has a distinctive, very hard, black crust with a rusty orange interior. The conk we see is not a fruiting body, it is sterile mass of mycelium, with the body of the fungus underneath the bark.
